Team Korea enjoy their first Wing Capsize

Image
When is a wing sail too much like an airplane wing? Team Korea enjoy their first Wing Capsize via SailJuice Blog by Andy Rice on 7/25/11 Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget As they say, if you don't capsize you're not trying hard enough. Team Korea are the latest to tip their AC45 over during training Skipper Chris Draper said,  "We have been pushing the boat and the manoeuvres harder and harder all week, and today midway through our session we got caught out. We were trying a manoeuvre perhaps a little too early in our plan and paid the price when it didn’t go well! Our guys reacted very quickly and the wing touched down slowly with everyone safe and uninjured. The support boat was very fast to help and we had the boat upright and damage free within three minutes, but it shows these cats have to be respected. After assessing the situation we were clear to get the boat wound up again and continued our training session." We spoke to Chris about his new

The Cycle Life: 10 Questions with a Tour Divide Favorite

Image
This type of racing is (in every sense) beyond me but still fascinating to read about. I particularly liked the description of a typical day! The Cycle Life: 10 Questions with a Tour Divide Favorite via The Outside Blog by The Cycle Life on 6/7/11 A gaunt Refsnider at the finish of the 2009 Tour Divide in Antelope Wells, New Mexico. If you think the Tour de France is the hardest bike race on earth, consider the Tour Divide . On this annual race from Banff, Canada, to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, racers roughly follow the Continental Divide for 2,780 miles. Mileage and terrain are only part of the challenge, as participants must follow a strict code of self support by carrying everything they need and accepting no outside aid except for what they can purchase along the route. At 9 a.m. this Friday (June 10), 74 cyclists will take up the challenge. Because of record snowpack, the pervasive threat of wildfires, and the largest field in the race's history, 15 riders will set o

Wing-masted Optimist points way to affordable America’s Cup?

Image
Does it have a canting keel as well? Wing-masted Optimist points way to affordable America’s Cup? via SailJuice Blog by Andy Rice on 5/31/11 A wing-masted Optimist was given a spin last weekend by New Zealand national champ Leonard Takahashi-Fry in a photoshoot for Japanese journalist Yoichi Yabe of Kazi Magazine. Takahashi-Fry dominated the regatta, winning six of the 12 races scored and placing 2nd another five times. His father is Robert Fry, a member of the Nippon Challenge for the America’s Cup in 1992 and 95. The wingsail Opti was inspired by dinghy sailors from the Wakatere Boating Club. Mike Drummond and his partners on the Oracle Racing Design Team adapted the top section of an A Class rig to the Opti. “The top section of our A-class catamaran wing is removable, and about the same size as an Opti rig. It was very easy to add a standard Opti mast tube to be able to step it into a normal Opti,” says Drummond. Posted via email from SailJuice News

Oracle Racing Team - Winner of 33rd America's Cup - Official Team Website: Back in the USA

Image
28.02.11 0650 PST was the time the America's Cup winning trimaran USA 17 touched American soil again. At least that's when the mooring lines secured the M.V Star Isjford alongside San Francisco's Pier 80 with USA 17 aboard. Three helicopters hovered overhead capturing the historic moment of the game-changing trimaran's homecoming. The sun rose over the Bay and ORACLE Racing's Pier 80 base right on cue. Earlier, M.V. Star Isjford passed under the Golden Gate Bridge at approximately 0530. Given that USA 17 is the fastest ever yacht in the 160 year history of the America's Cup, it is fitting that she entered her home town for the first time a little ahead of schedule. USA 17 left American soil in December 2009, shipped from San Diego, CA, to Valencia, Spain, ahead of her 2:0 victory in the 33rd America's Cup on February 14, 2010. If windspeeds re
